This project was done as part of a Storyboarding class. We were given the script to a beer commercial and told to break it down into 6 boards. We weren’t allowed to watch the commercial, of course. The second was to reboard the opening of an old cartoon with the same audio. Courage’s audio was a little restrictive, but I’m glad I got a crack at it, as I always thought the opening could have used more of the bizarre tone the series was a master of.
Mongoose Character Intro AnimaticÂ
As preparation for my final year film, I boarded an introduction to the characters and tone. Ultimately it ended up being quite different, but it was very helpful to get me thinking of the Mongoose’s movement and furtive behaviour. Voirrey is much more sassy in this version. This was done with digital ink, printed (I like to work with them on the wall, where I’m able to rearrange them) and then watercoloured to capture an eerie, handmade tone that the stop-motion would eventually have.

As for the final film, the boards ended up being much scratchier, due to constant revision and the substitution of a pop-through for the stop-motion parts. This is the animatic at its final stage before the pop-through was inserted. The drawings are very rough and general and much of this was cut, but I hope it shows some of the earlier camera and layout that I’d originally conceived of. Also a good show of the drawings I make in a hurry as well, I suppose.
